The village of Chilton, Buckinghamshire
Then and now.....

Page Three. Chilton School: as sketched by headmaster Mr Pace the head master, and photographed recently…..

This is how it was in 1874, and also exactly as it looked when my mother attended in the thirties under Mr Vowles, and I attended in the fifties (still Mr Vowles) and early sixties (Mr Pace).

The entrance porch, as I remember it. I think the flaming torch sign indicated that the school also housed books from the County Library.

This sketch shows the infants’ class room and cloakroom that were added in 1894. I remember school milk frozen solid in that porch.

I  also remember the toilets in the playground around the back. They hadn’t changed much since 1894….mains sewage didn’t come to Chilton until about 1962. There was a huge hole in the road outside the school when the latter was being installed. One day the Oxford  bus almost fell in.

The mysterious new school that came…then just vanished.
