Great Great Grandfather GILES BEARD  1815 - 1885

Giles Beard was born in Painswick, Gloucestershire on 4th June 1815.  He was the third child and eldest son of Robert Beard and his wife Elizabeth.

The 1841 the Census Returns show that Giles was living alone in New Street Painswick and that he was engaged in trade as a Cordwainer (a shoemaker).  He was to continue in this trade for the rest of his life.

On  31 May 1844, Giles married Eliza Catherine Gore, in Cheltenham. Nine children were born to the couple between 1845 and 1863.  These were; Robert Henry, Clara Elizabeth, Henrietta, Millicent Gore, Giles Charles, Edward William, Fanny, another Robert Henry (the first one died at the age of nine) and Eliza Catherine.

Giles seems to have attained a measure of status within his local community.  He was a member of the parish church vestry 1850's and was appointed a constable for the Edge district of Painswick in 1853

Giles’s wife died in 1874 and was buried in the cemetry on Painswick Beacon.

In 1878, at the age of 62 Giles married for a second time.  His bride was a 45 year old spinster, Martha Dimock. Giles died in 1885 at the age of 70.  He was buried with his first wife Eliza Catherine.
